Science in Design Summit tour scheduled

BOCA RATON, Fla. — The Science in Design Summit is launching as a North American “tour” this year with a series of educational events at leading design centers across the United States and Canada.

The program, which aims to bring cutting-edge science to the design industry, will explore subjects such as biophilia, neuroaesthetics, environmental psychology, colors of health and our evolutionary psychology.

In a release, organizers said, “The convergence of science and design- ‘neuroaesthetics’ — is changing the future of the design industry. Scientists and medical professionals at leading institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, the Mayo Clinic, the University of Texas and more, now document the health benefits of fine design.”

Mike Peterson

Organizers successfully launched the first summit as a virtual event and pilot program this past October as the lead up to this year’s tour.

“The target audience for this is furniture manufacturers, furnuiture retailers, designers and architects because the principles of things like biophilia and neuroaesthetics apply to all aspects of the home furnishings industry,” said Mike Peterson, president of Visionary Design Marketing, and co-producer of the summit.

The dates and locations to join the events in-person or virtually this year are:

April 21 – South Florida Design Park

April 28, Chicago Merchandise Mart

May 18 – Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC)

June 9 – IMPROVE Canada, Toronto

June 21, San Francisco Design Center

June 23 — Pacific Design Center, LA

Fall – New York Design Center, date to be confirmed

Sept. 15 – Boston Design Center

Oct. 13 – Minneapolis, IMS

Registration is available for $99 each event and includes six educational seminars and six Health Safety and Welfare continuing education unit credits. Sponsors and others  backing the event include Benjamin Moore, Currey & Co., Interiors, Boston Architecture School, Human Architecture Planning Institute (HAPI), Ethos Design Collective and more than nine design centers in North America. A limited number of sponsorships are still available.

“Science is leading the way to helping the design industry better understand its ability to improve health. Yes, improve health. It’s a game changer,” said Peterson.

Peterson is partnering on the summit series with Linda Kafka, producer of the LivAble Design Summit, Toronto, to advance the cause of health-based design.
