WASHINGTON — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is advising consumers to stop using Classic Brands Holdings’ “10-inch Cool Gel Memory Foam” mattresses because of a fire hazard tied to the product not meeting the federal flammability standard for mattresses.
As the importer, Columbia, Maryland-based Classic Brands Holdings LLC, is going out of business, the CPSC said that the company is unable to conduct a recall.
The advisory involves some 21,655 Classic Brands cool gel ventilated memory foam mattresses. The 10-inch mattresses have “Cool Gel Memory Foam” printed on the side of the units. They were sold in twin, twin XL, full, king and California king sizes.
Those affected by the notice were made in Spain between January 2021 and August 2022 and sold on Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Wayfair.com, HomeDepot.com, Macys.com and Target.com from March 2021 through October 2022. Consumers can see if their product was made in Spain between these dates by checking the date of manufacture on the label.
If the label says that the product was made in Spain during this time frame or if the label was removed by the consumer, the units fall within the scope of the safety notice, the CPSC said, noting that consumers should stop using them immediately. Those mattresses that are made in other countries and/or are made outside those dates are not covered by the announcement.
For those mattresses covered by the announcement, consumers have been advised to dispose of them in accordance with local or state recycling programs. Consumers are urged to not resell or donate these mattresses to secondhand stores. They are also urged to report any incidents they have encountered with the mattresses, including any related injuries, to the CPSC at www.saferproducts.gov.
