Mercana Furniture and Decor buys distribution center in Newport News, Va.

BRITISH COLUMBIA – 2022-01-26 – To address increasing demand and deliver shipping efficiencies to its retailer and designer customers, Mercana Furniture and Décor has acquired a new distribution center in the City of Newport News, Virginia.
Formerly occupied by Canon Global, the 124,676 sq. ft. distribution center will serve the company’s East Coast and Central US customers, housing thousands of items across its full lineup of art, furniture, lighting, and accessories.

“Located near all major port terminals and railroads, Newport News is extremely favorable for inbound and outbound shipping,” says Michael Saby, Chief Operations Officer. “This investment will improve the agility of our supply chain and allow us to get products to our customers quicker than ever before. We expect to cut lead times from 7-10 business days to just 2-3 business days, it’s a gamechanger for our US customers. We also see opportunity to centralize all returns to this facility and potentially offer a white glove service as we
strive to meet our customers’ needs.”

The company worked closely with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the Newport News Industrial Development Authority to ensure its part in the City’s initiative to attract new business investment into the region. “With close to 300 parking spaces available, this facility provides massive opportunity to expand in the future” says Saby. “We plan to employ at least 26 roles within our first year of operation and hope that more efficiencies will bring more roles as we grow into the space”.

President of Mercana, Devon Smith, adds, “it’s a privilege for us to be welcomed into the Newport News community. For us, success goes well beyond revenue and size, but is driven by a greater sense of community and purpose. We never want to lose sight of these values and are excited to be playing a part in cultivating sustainable business in the area. As for our customers, we’re excited to be able to meet their needs more efficiently as consumer demand continues to grow in 2022.”
