We could pull up a list of other products that we could add to the single order to offset shipping costs.
Ten tables cost the same to ship as one more or less. Now, they do not have the tables we need in stock to balance the order cost wise. Nor will a client pay the extra charge to cover the over the top shipping fee.
If a client wants the bed only, we could sell it off the floor and expect to get a replacement back with in several weeks. Now it 6-9 months. Guess what, unless you buy the whole bed room group, we are not pulling the bed.. And most clients will not wait 6-9 months for it either unless they are building a home or moving in that time period.
Our floor has become full of slow selling products. It’s all over priced. Way too expensive. In the past, we could discount upholstery at 30% and cover the shipping costs. Today its 20% off retail, and that’s after multiple price hikes and surcharges coupled with 150% higher shipping costs.
We have canceled multiple stock orders because we have lost the ability to monitor the flow and factories just ship you stuff to get it off their dock. When we are forced to make floor stock purchases and re-orders 6-9 (and some cases 12) months in advance, the ability to run a profitable business is greatly challenged.
