Holiday events aim to reinvigorate sales that have slowed significantly during the summer months, positioning retailers for a rebound late in the 3rd quarter and beyond
As expected, retailers around the country offered aggressive promotions for the big holiday sales weekend which began a week or so prior and continued through the weekend and even into Tuesday. These ranged from major discounts on a wide selection of bedroom, dining and living room furniture, plus special financing to sweeten the deal.
The big winners were consumers who’ve diverted some of their disposable income toward things like vacations and high ticket concerts in recent months. With a wide selection that also included mattresses, they were able to pick and choose products that suit their needs for fall and holiday season entertaining.
Below are some of the ads that caught our eye from the last days of the holiday weekend promotions.
American Furniture Warehouse in Englewood, Colorado, highlighted sharpened price points on a wide mix of products from sofas and sectionals to companion occasional furniture. A big emphasis was on features and benefits such as LED lights and USB/wireless charging capabilities aimed at complementing how consumers live, entertain and work in the home. The ads also promoted the retailer’s expanded footprint outside of Colorado, including stores in Texas and Arizona.
Ashley Furniture’s Labor Day promotion included featured finds under $699 again covering a wide mix of products, ranging from bedroom and dining to living room furniture. The company also offered 0% interest for 60 months with its Ashley Advantage Synchrony credit card. There was no minimum purchase required, although customers have to make the purchase in the physical store.
Rooms To Go’s promotion included savings that customers could get with coupons, which most deal seekers love. Here, too, the deals extended to a wide mix of product categories including youth furniture, mattresses and occasional tables. As shown in the ad above, customers also could take advantage of 55 months of interest-free financing. This is the type of perk that lets customers enjoy their furniture while making minimum payments each month.
Houston, Texas-based Gallery Furniture also offered special financing including 0% APR over 60 months with their Gallery Furniture credit card. Good on purchases made through Oct. 1, it requires customers to make a down payment of 15%. As seen in the ad above, the retailer also heavily promoted its outdoor category with savings up to 40%. The goal? Get customers interested in some late-in-the-season products that they can use while the weather remains warm and into next year and beyond. In Texas, we imagine there are many months of warm weather to enjoy!
Badcock & More offered savings of up to 50% storewide. The promotion extended to furniture and household appliances such as washers, dryers and electric ranges, creating a one-stop shop of savings for customers in their respective markets. Plus, the retailer also offered to pay sales tax, another deal-sweetener that speaks to customers with significant additional savings. Another added convenience? Customers can buy the product right on the retailer’s website.
Mattress Firm offered its “King Bed, Queen Price” promotion with savings of up to $700. It also added a free adjustable base on select mattresses, a value of up to $499. To help customers find the best deals, it advertised certain items as a Labor Day or Special Deal with the photos of respective items on sale. The goal is to be as easy to shop as possible, and also allow customers to identify the best holiday weekend deals.
On its website, Wayfair offered eye-catching Labor Day clearance deals of up to 70% off, with Sealy mattresses among the featured products. Other promotions, including some with smaller discounts, also were available on various products ranging from furniture and accessories to appliances, lighting, rugs and outdoor furniture, including outdoor fireplaces and heaters. With such a wide mix of product, the online retailer showcased the depth and breadth of it offerings.
Using a simple yet effective chart seen at the right of this ad on its website, Havertys made it easy for customers to see where they were saving money. The message? The more you spend, the more you save. What better incentive for customers to achieve the biggest return on their investment? Another perk was the ability to get 0% interest for 60 months on purchases made through Sept. 4.
Kittle’s Furniture showcased a mix of upholstery options on its homepage for its Labor Day sales event. But the savings extended through every room in the home with deals to be had on bedroom, dining room, living room (including occasional tables, entertainment wall units, benches and desks) plus outdoor furniture and mattresses. While shopping, customers could also learn more about the retailer’s design services, its room-planning technology and its repair services.
Labor Day savings were front and center on Baer’s website, as seen with these promotions in coastal-inspired bedroom and dining room. The Florida retailer also identified categories with in-stock products, ranging from case goods to fabric and leather upholstery. The site also promoted key brands on its floor and its ability to bring rooms to life for consumers with its 3D customization tool. These, along with promotional financing, are just a few examples of how the retailer is giving customers a reason to shop and spend.
Nebraska Furniture Mart’s promotion offered deals of up to 50% off. Its ad also highlighted the many categories it has to offer in its massive stores, ranging from furniture and bedding to appliances. A link to the sale quickly guided consumers to the best deals, which also extended to baby and youth furniture, rugs and outdoor furniture. And even though its stores were closed on Monday to allow employees to enjoy the holiday with their families, these and other deals were available throughout the day online. And for the first time in 2023, the company offered 30-month, no interest if paid in full financing on purchases of $1,499 or more.
Slumberland Furniture offered discounts of up to 60% off as part of its Labor Day promotion. Other deals included twin mattresses starting at $129, a free chair with a sofa purchase and 24-month, interest-free financing on purchases of $999 or more. With page after page of products on its website, the deals went on and on, giving customers a wide mix of items to choose from at reduced pricing.
Miskelly Furniture offered up to $700 off on select products also with the opportunity for special financing with zero money down. The website also let consumers know what products were in stock, and thus available for next-day delivery in the Jackson, Mississippi, delivery area. This, along with the promotional financing and special pricing gave customers immediate gratification, while also helping fuel business for the multistore retailer. It’s a model that many could emulate to help improve bottom- and top-line growth now and in the future.
Florida retailer City Furniture offered some discounts of its own for its Labor Day sales event. The website showcased these deals across a broad range of categories, including bedroom, dining room, living room, home entertainment furniture and mattresses, to name several key segments. The website also showed consumers how much they were saving, listing the original price crossed out in black and the new discounted price in bright red. Each product on sale also showed how much customers would pay with promotional financing, with payments as little as $5 per month.
HOM Furniture offered an extra 10% off purchases of $999 or more as well as no interest financing if paid within 12 months. Customers could apply for this financing directly on the website. They also could shop for a wide mix of products ranging from dining and upholstery to bedroom and outdoor furniture. The website also showed the sale price compared with the original price, allowing customers to see how much they were saving on various products.
Gardner White offered attention-grabbing savings of up to 80% off storewide. On top of that, it also paid sales tax along with offering free delivery. Its mattress sale also offered hundreds of dollars savings on key brands including Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster, Serta, Purple and more. Plus consumers could get an additional $50 in savings just by taking the retailer’s Best Sleep Quiz.
Jerome’s also offered to pay sales tax on top of a wide menu of deals on products throughout its stores. The promotions included various categories including bedroom and living room furniture, with instances where customers could buy the bed and receive a free nightstand or buy the sofa and receive a free loveseat. On top of that it offered 60-month no-interest financing on purchases of $1,999 or more. A video on the website further communicated the deals that could be had for every room of the home and in every ZIP code where the Southern California retailer has stores.
La-Z-Boy’s website showcased a mix of deals on upholstery and other furniture that customers could buy either in-store or online. On its website, customers could also apply for special 0% financing for up to a year with a minimum purchase with their La-Z-Boy credit card.
American Furniture Warehouse of Greensboro, North Carolina (not to be confused with the AFW in Englewood, Colorado), advertised its biggest sale event of the year on its website. One of these promotions offered savings of up to $700 on select adjustable mattresses. But the savings extended far beyond this, including bedroom, home entertainment and upholstery to name a few core categories. The site also let consumers know what was in stock and available for immediate pickup/delivery.
Bob’s Discount Furniture also offered promotional financing that customers could apply for online, with six-month, 12-month, 30-month or 60-month options available. The Labor Day savings were available on top sellers in various categories including bedroom, dining room, living room and occasional furniture. On its site, the retailer even offers design ideas and space-saving ideas for customers to make the most of their smaller-scale bedroom or dining rooms.
Bassett’s Labor Day promoti0n allowed customers to save up to 30% on select sofas, sectionals and dining room furniture. With a simple click on the shop now tab, customers could browse a wide mix of products available either through their local store or on the website.
Steinhafels highlighted the grand opening of its Harwood Heights superstore as part of its Labor Day promotion. However the savings extended to other stores too with deals up to $1,000 off and up to an additional $100 off purchases of 1,999 or more. Another perk? The availability of 60-month 0% financing with use of the Steinhafels credit card. Other promotions also were available for 12-month and 72-month financing.
With its “Extend the Summer” theme, Belfort Furniture encouraged shoppers to enjoy the rest of the summer and warm weather months by shopping its wide selection of outdoor furniture at savings of up to $1,000 on select outdoor sets. Recognizing that the retailer’s Labor Day event extended to many more categories inside the home as well — including other savings of up to $1,000 on select sofas and dining sets — we like the idea of making the summer last just a little longer and thus enjoying spending as much time outdoors as possible!
