Gallery’s Jim McIngvale bets big on Brady and the Bucs

HOUSTON — Mattress Mack is back in betting form.

The Houston retailer flew to  Colorado Wednesday to place a $3.46 million bet on DraftKings’ mobile app for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to cover as 3.5-point underdogs against the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

It’s the largest wager on Super Bowl LV so far, according to an ESPN report, and it’s connected to the payout McIngvale could make in the store’s “2021 Big Game Promo.” Customers who enter and spend $3,000 or more on a Tempur-Pedic, Sealy or Stearns & Foster mattress and/or an adjustable base would get a refund if the Bucs win.

McIngvale is no novice at sports betting and promotions tied to the results. In 2019, he made news with a series of bets tied to baseball’s World Series and the run-up to it. (He reportedly lost about $13 million on that one, excluding the boost in business the promotion generated).

According to DraftKings, if the Bucs cover, McIngvale would win $2.72 million (total payout: $6.18 million).  The sportsbook recently has had the Bucs as three-point underdogs. So if you bet the Bucs at +3, you’d wager $106 to win $100. There are alternative lines, however, like the one McIngvale played. The Bucs at +3.5 requires a $127 bet for a $100 win.

“Tampa Bay is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball and led by the greatest football player of all time in Tom Brady, so I’m betting big on the Bucs who have overcome tough matchups throughout this postseason,” McIngvale said in a DraftKings release.

“The NFL has only seen eight instances of back-to-back champions and none in the past 16 years, so I like my chances going into Super Bowl LV for this trend to continue.”
