US Consumer Product Safety Commission says the units violate smoldering ignition requirements, posing a fire hazard to consumers
WASHINGTON — Bedding manufacturers Innovative Bedding Solutions and SBL have recalled about 1,250 GhostBed mattresses that violate smoldering ignition requirements of federal flammability regulations.
Although there have been no incidents or injuries, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission said the violation poses a fire hazard.
The recall involves the GhostBed Natural mattresses with the model number beginning with 12GBNAT or “Natural.” Sold in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, split king and California king sizes, they are about 12 inches thick and have an ivory top quilted panel and an ivory quilted side panel with horizontal lines.
The GhostBed Natural logo also is embroidered in black and green on the mattress cover, and the model number and date of manufacturer in month and year is on a white label sewn into the seam of the mattress.
They were made in the U.S. from June 2021 through March 2023 and were sold on GhostBed.com, GhostBedNatural.com and other websites during the same period for between $1,200 and $2,500.
Consumers have been advised to immediately stop using the recalled units and contact GhostBed for a free cover for the mattress, which will bring it into compliance with the federal regulation. The company also is contacting all known purchasers directly, the CPSC said.
Alan Hirschhorn, executive vice president at GhostBed, noted that the issue involved one of the company’s contract manufacturers and resulted when a small run of fabric that was not finished correctly made it into a small number of mattresses involved in the recall.
“And we are appreciative of the CPSC because we want everybody to be safe, ” he told Home News Now. “We want to catch these things, and of course we follow all the guidelines.”
In addition to posting the notice on its website, he said the company has also reached out to customers to inform them of the issue along with the simple solution of requesting a replacement cover.
“It’s just a protective cover that they can get from us for free that goes over the mattress, so it’s really called a remedy instead of a recall,” he said. “We’re proactive, and as soon as we heard about it, we took the necessary steps to make sure that everybody stayed safe. We are protecting our customers and moving forward.”
