This week as part of his ongoing Last Word series, Home News Now Editor-at-Large Ray Allegrezza interviews Lael Thompson of Denver-based Home Collections Furniture. He talks about how his father got into the business at Ethan Allen and later established his own retail business. He started out selling unfinished furniture, but eventually took things to the next level with Broyhill through the brand’s Home Collections program.
As that brand eventually migrated over to Big Lots following the bankruptcy of former Broyhill parent company Heritage Home Group, Thompson had to reimagine his retail store overnight. “We had to change and we had to change quickly,” he notes. But in his words, adversity creates opportunity” and the opportunity here was in building a floor with a host of new products at middle price points, but also with special-order capabilities.
