WASHINGTON — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of nearly 2,500 crib mattresses sold on Amazon that pose suffocation hazards for infants.
The agency also said that the mattresses violate multiple provisions of the federal safety standard for crib mattresses, including firmness and thickness tests and missing warning labels.
Announced Nov. 30, both recalls alert retailers and manufacturers to the dangers such units can pose to babies. A federal safety standard took effect in the summer of 2022 to avoid such dangers, including suffocation hazards.
The first recall involves 820 Vibe Bear play-yard mattresses that were made after Aug. 15, 2022. They are white with a diagonal quilted surface that is 38 inches long by 26 inches wide and 3 inches high and feature images of green and yellow trees, houses and foxes. They also have a dark blue tag hanging off the mattress featuring an image of a cartoon teddy bear. The mattresses fold in half and have a crease going down the length of the mattress in the middle where it folds. The model number YXB17 and the date of manufacture in year and month is on a tag on the edge of the mattress.
Made in China, they were sold on Amazon.com from January 2023 through June 2023 for $34. While no incidents or injuries have been reported, the CPSC has advised consumers to immediately stop using and destroy the mattresses by cutting them in half and contacting the China retailer Beyond Baby that sold them to Amazon directly at recallguof@outlook.com where they can send photos of the destroyed mattresses for a full refund. Beyond Baby and Amazon also are contacting all known purchasers directly.
The second recall involves about 1,650 of the Dodo Baby House Pack and Play mattresses also sold on Amazon. The crib mattresses are 38 inches long and 26 inches wide and feature the model number YX-04. Made on or after Aug. 15, 2022, they feature a light blue color on the top and bottom of the mattress with white triangles. A tag can be found on the edge of the mattress with the format YYYY MM representing the year and month of manufacture.
Made in China, they were sold at Amazon.com between February 2023 and June 2023 for $34. While no incidents or injuries have been reported, consumers have been advised to immediately stop using and destroy the mattresses by cutting them in half. They can then contact Dodo Baby House, the Chinese retailer that sold the units to Amazon at recall336@outlook.com, where they can send photos of the destroyed units to receive a full refund.
Dodo Baby House and Amazon also are contacting all known purchasers directly.
