Longwood Forest Products recalls 39,900 bunk beds due to entrapment, strangulation hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Case goods importer Longwood Forest Products has recalled nearly 39,900 bunk beds due to an entrapment and strangulation hazard that resulted in the death of a two-year old in 2018.

The recently announced recall is among the largest involving furniture in 2021 and the only one in the furniture category this year that has been tied to the death of a child.

The recall involves the Angel Line bunk beds sold with angled ladders. According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, the metal hook fastening the ladder to the top bunk bed frame can move away or detach from the bed frame when the ladder is lifted. This causes a gap between the ladder step and bed frame to be wider than 3.5 inches, which poses an entrapment and strangulation hazard.

The CPSC said that to prevent any further deaths, consumers should immediately stop using these recalled bunk beds, block children’s access to the units and contact Angel Line for a free repair kit with brackets. These brackets, the CPSC said, are designed to reinforce the angled bunk bed ladders. The beds should not be used until the repair kit has been installed.

The units named in the recall include the Fremont twin-over-twin bunk bed, models 71210-21, 71210-49 and 71210-67; the Creston twin-over-twin bunk bed, models 71230-21, 71230-49 and 71230-75 and the Brandon twin-over-full bunk bed, models 71420-21 and 71420-75.

The model number can be found printed on a label on the headboard/footboard of the upper bunk. Made in Vietnam and imported by Longwood Forest Products of Pennsville, N.J., they were sold at www.amazon.com, www.ojcommerce.com, www.walmart.com and www.wayfair.com from March 2016 through June 2021 for between $180 and $330.

In addition to receiving a free repair kit with reinforcement brackets for the ladder, consumers who paid for the bunk beds to be assembled at the time of purchase will receive reimbursement for any help needed to make the repairs.
