20 more coming this fall

DETROIT — Loves Furniture & Mattresses opened its first seven stores here, breathing new life into the big boxes Art Van Furniture used to call its own.

They are the first of 27 primarily midprice stores coming from the new company across Michichage, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Virginia and Maryland — all former Art Van’s or affiliate Levin and Wolf Furniture showrooms caught up in Art Van’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing early this year, which led to its eventual collapse.

Grand openings were held for metro Detroit Loves stores in Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Canton, Portage, Shelby Township, Howell and Port Huron. The others will follow this fall, though the exact timing hasn’t been set.

“In the past 100 days, our team has worked tirelessly to build a completely new furniture buying experience, created for how customers live and shop today,” Loves CEO Matt Damiani told Home News Now.

“The response has been outstanding so far. The flexibility to shop online and then come in-store to touch, feel and experience furniture is really resonating with customers. Our unique product mix really offers options for shoppers at every budget to love where they live.”

Each location will feature home furnishings, including mattresses, from sources such as Lane, Bassett, Flexsteel, Jonathan Lewis, Bernhardt, Tempur-Pedic, Beautyrest, Serta, Stearns & Foster, as well as exclusive brands to Loves. Stores also feature a Loves Treasures accessories area showcasing everything from wall décor to decorative accessories. Merchandise in the space will rotate seasonally.

In a release, the retailer said its consumer experience “is rooted in clear and simple pricing so customers can easily shop in alignment with their budget, style and fashion for every price point, and features a seamless process to shop online, in-store or both.”

Customers have the option of choosing how they want to shop — either independently or with help from the retailer’s home and sleep specialists who have expertise and training to provide support in-person or online. By-appointment shopping also is offered.

“We created Loves because we think everyone deserves to love where they live,” Damiani said in a release. “We saw a better way to build a furniture buying experience — one that is personalized and designed to encourage exploration, imagination and discovery of the perfect pieces to help create memories at home that last.”

Loves also announced a community alliance with Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, which, since the pandemic hit in March, has nearly doubled its monthly food distribution and expanded services to better reach those in need. Loves pledged to donate $10,000 to the charity and a portion of sales from the Sept. 3-7 grand opening of its Canton location.

Loves said it is hiring nearly 1,000 employees to support the 27 stores on tap.
