CPSC holding Aug. 17 webinar on mandatory safety standard for clothing storage units

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is hosting a webinar on the requirements of the STURDY (Stop Tip-Overs of Unstable Dressers on Youth) Act this week for companies looking to gain further insights into a new federal safety standard for clothing storage units, which takes effect Sept. 1.

The CPSC’s Small Business Ombudsman Team is hosting the webinar at 1 p.m. Aug. 17 Eastern Time. The webinar will provide information on the scope of the rule, which aims to reduce tip-over incidents involving clothing storage units produced on or after Sept. 2. It also will provide information on testing and labeling requirements.

While most companies have already prepared for the Sept. 1 enforcement date, the webinar will allow companies to review aspects of the rule to make certain they are in compliance and also ask any remaining questions they have regarding anti-tipping safety measures under the federal standard, which meets the requirements of STURDY.

The voluntary standard — ASTM F-2057-23 — on which the requirements of the mandatory standard is based, has been in effect since the time it was published in early February.
