October furniture store sales jump 5.2%

WASHINGTON — October U.S. furniture and home furnishings sales increased 5.2% over sales for the same month last year in a continuation of a post-lockdown recovery and despite unprecedented supply chain problems.

Sales for the sector jumped to $10.41 billion from $9.90 billion for the same period a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce report released this morning. Sales slipped 0.4% from  $10.45 billion in September, with the latter figured revised up from the previous $10.41 billion estimate.

Combined retail and food services sales increased 5.7% from October 2019 and were up 0.3% from September to an estimated $553.3 billion. Retail trade sales were up 8.5% from October a year ago and 0.3% from September.

Leading the pack again was non-store retailers, which includes e-commerce companies, posted a 29.1% year-over-year gain, followed by building material and garden and supplies stores, up 19.5%, and sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and book stores, up 12.4%.

Food services and bars were the laggards, with year-over-year sales off 14.2%, followed by gas stations, down 14%; clothing and clothing accessories stores, off 12.6% and department stores (a subset of general merchandise stores), down 11.9%.

Combined retail and food services sales for the August-through-October period increased 5.1% from the same period in 2019. Furniture and home furnishings stores saw a 5.3% increase and were up 14.8% from the May-through-July 2020 period, though many stores remained closed for most of May.
