SAN DIEGO, Calif — Long-time case goods manufacturer Oak Furniture West is ceasing operations after nearly 50 years, marking what the company described as the end of an era of providing quality wood furniture for retailers around the U.S.
The company was established by Frank Real and his wife in 1976. Up to the announcement of the closing this week, the company operated some 300,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse facilities in Tijuana.
The Reals are retiring and their children have pursued other careers that are to a large extent outside the family business.
The company declined to disclose how many workers in the factory and its headquarters offices in San Diego would be impacted by the closing. While the operation has ceased production, it is in the process of shipping completed orders to various customers.
Over the years, Oak Furniture West manufactured a line of home entertainment, and bedroom furniture including primary and secondary bedroom as well as youth bedroom furniture.
The company said that the focus of the business now is to shift to managing and developing the multi-building industrial park that has housed the company’s manufacturing facilities for the past 30 years. Officials noted that plans for these facilities “are underway, promising new growth and innovation in the years to come.”
“We are incredibly proud of our history and the relationships we’ve built over the decades,” said Frank Real, chief executive officer. “This decision was not made lightly, but we believe it is the right step for our family and our future. We are excited to concentrate on our real estate ventures and explore new opportunities within the industrial park that has been our home for so long.”
He added that over the years, the company has been known for its commitment to North American manufacturing and modern manufacturing techniques, “earning the loyalty of customers and vendors alike.”
“Our legacy in the furniture industry has been one of value, quality and service,” Real added. “We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who have supported us throughout the years. We look forward to the future and new possibilities that lie ahead.”
The company plans to have an auction of machinery and equipment at the end of the month. Myron Bowling Auctioneers is conducting the sale.
