WASHINGTON — September U.S. furniture and home furnishings sales jumped 4.6% from the same month last year as the rebound from the spring pandemic lockdown continued.
Sales for the sector increased to $10.41 billion from $9.95 billion in September 2019, according to the latest report from U.S. Department of Commerce. Sales were up 0.5% from $10.36 billion in August, the latter figure revised up from the previously reported. $10.23 billion.

For the third quarter ending in September, furniture and home furnishings store sales rose 4.1% from the third quarter last year. They were up a whopping 46.4% from the second quarter this year, which included a month (April) during which most stores were closed.
Combined retail and food services sales increased 5.4% from September 2019 and were up 1.9% from the previous month to an estimated $549.3 billion. Retail trade sales were up 8.2% from September a year ago and 1.9% from August.
Non-stores retailers, which included e-commerce companies, again posted the greatest year-over-year gain, up 23.8%, followed by building material and garden and supplies stores, up 19.1%, and rebounding sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and book stores, up 14.4%.
Food services and drinking places, down 14.4% year over year, gas stations, down 13.3%, and closing and clothing accessories stores, down 12.5%, were the laggards.
