WASHINGTON — Ikea has expanded its recall of its Lettan mirrors, which pose a laceration hazard as the units are prone to fall and break.
According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, the retailer previously recalled 22,400 of the mirrors this past March. The recall has expanded to include 25,100 additional mirrors including 14,600 in the U.S. and 10,500 sold in Canada.
The CPSC said that the plastic fittings that attach the mirror to the wall can break, posing a hazard in which the mirror can shatter and cause a laceration hazard.
While no injuries have been reported, the CPSC said that Ikea has received 10 incident reports related to the mirrors in addition to the 55 reported in the previous recall. In one instance, the plastic fittings came loose and caused the mirror to fall off the wall.
The mirror is likely to be hung in a bathroom although it also could be used in a bedroom. The nature of the recall alerts bedroom resources and retailers carrying any type of mirror of the hazards that can occur if the fittings on the mirror are defective or it is not hung properly.
The recall involves all sizes of Lettan flat mirrors, which have no frame and are about 38 inches high and come in widths of 23, 31, 39 and 47 inches. They also bear the supplier number 21944 and a date stamp of 2325 and 2105 with the first two numbers representing the year and the last two numbers representing the week when they were manufactured. The date stamp and supplier number is on the back of the mirror.
Made in China, they were sold at Ikea stores nationwide and online at Ikea.com from December 2019 through June 2023 for between $23 and $56.
Consumers have been advised to immediately stop using the recalled mirrors and contact Ikea to receive a free set of replacement wall fittings and instructions on how to install the fittings on the mirror and affix it to the wall. Customers also can return the mirror to any Ikea store for a full refund. A proof of purchase is required to receive a full refund.
